Reading is fundamental to our way of life. Without it, the transfer of knowledge through generations would end abruptly with genetic inheritance. Books allow authors to communicate to readers across vast distances of space and time, transcending separations of culture and creed, to unveil the experiences and values that are intrinsic to the human condition.

But of course there’s a lot more to it. A reader can’t simply gaze at a page and expect to uncover whatever secrets the author wants to express. In fact, without a critical eye on the page, even the most profound sentences can go unnoticed.
