10+ Ways You Can Help Your Kids Fall In Love With Reading

A love of reading provides numerous benefits to children, ranging from helping increase your child’s IQ to promoting more imaginative and artistic thought processes. Unfortunately, many kids lose interest in books by the time they reach middle school, even if they liked reading during their younger years. If you’re looking for ways to encourage your child to fall in love with books, here are some things you can try that may help.

12. Practice What You Preach

Young kids are perceptive and like to copy their parents, so one of the easiest ways to get them reading is to model your own love of reading. Make reading a regular part of your daily routine. Have your own books handy for quiet reading time, and make time each day to read aloud to your children. Reading aloud helps them engage with the material — even if they have trouble reading — and turns it into a fun social activity. Keep it up for as long as your child lets you. Many kids start losing interest in reading after they’ve learned to read but before they’re truly comfortable with it, so continuing to read aloud can help bridge those tough times.

11. Have Fun With It

When you read aloud to your children, break out your amateur acting skills to turn it into a more exciting experience. Try to incorporate goofy voices and sound effects into your regular stories. Miming actions that are described in the book, or even dressing up in costumes and using props, can really help the book come alive for your child.
