Getting a diabetes diagnosis can be very confusing. Understanding what a loved one who has just been given this diagnosis can feel impossible.
Not only is it an incredibly emotional experience, the disease itself is very complicated. Even people who think they understand it, may not fully understand the difference between the types. Moreover, misconceptions about diabetes give a lot of people the false impression that they understand the disease more than they do.
Who hasn’t heard someone make the false assumption that diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar, or had someone suggest that they could cure their type 1 diabetes if only they lost a little weight?
If you or a loved one has just received a diagnosis, this video is a great place to begin learning what it all means. Terms like “insulin” and “blood-glucose levels” can be confusing if you don’t know their role in the body.
