Dad’s Furious At School Nurse After Diabetic Daughter’s Ignored & Goes Into Insulin Shock
A dad is furious after his diabetic daughter passed out on the school bus and was taken to the hospital, after her middle school nurse ignored her request for glucagon while her blood sugar was low.
He took to reddit to call out the nurse and share his frustration. He explained that his daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was five years old. To be safe and prepared, they have a 504 plan in place at her school, and the father has conferences with school staff and the nurse every year.
He learned his daughter had passed out after the school called him to let him know that they had taken her to the hospital. He immediately drove to the hospital, and thankfully, she was okay.
He talked to his daughter to make sure she wasn’t ignoring her symptoms and had eaten her lunch. She told her dad that she checked her sugar with her teacher after she felt off toward the end of the day. When the teacher saw how low her sugar was, she sent her to the nurse.
“When she told the nurse she needed glucagon, the nurse said no and she should take it at home when she gets there,” the father wrote.
“The nurse did not give her her medication AND THEN SENT HER TO THE BUS,” he continued. “The 504 plan in place has a stipulation that if her blood sugar is too low at the end of the day, she cannot take the bus home.”
He grew furious, especially since bus drivers aren’t trained to know what to look for or to give her medication.
He has since planned a meeting with the school’s administrative staff to discuss the incident.
According to MayoClinic, Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin, which prevents sugar from entering cells to produce energy. While Type 1 can develop in adults, it usually appears during childhood or adolescence.
Low blood sugar is when your blood sugar levels have fallen so low that you need to take action to bring them back to your target range, according to Diabetes.org.
If the blood sugar level continues to drop, the brain does not get enough glucose and stops functioning correctly. This can lead to blurred vision, difficulty concentrating, confused thinking, slurred speech, numbness, and drowsiness. If low blood sugar is not brought back to target range, it can become extremely dangerous, possibly leading to seizures, coma, or death.
