Preschoolers Create & Auction Art To Raise Money For Nonprofits In Their Community

Preschoolers in San Antonio have been inspiring local artists to create art that benefits nonprofits for the past eight years.

Gracias San Antonio: Children Are Citizens is a program at Pre-K 4 SA that teaches these four-year-olds not only how to be civic-minded individuals, but also the importance of supporting their community, creating art, and learning about nonprofits.

The program has raised more than $33,000 since 2013 for various nonprofits including the San Antonio Humane Society, Good Samaritan Community Services, St. Pj’s Children’s Home, Therapy Animals of SA, Any Baby Can of SA, and many more.

“Gracias San Antonio is grounded in the belief that children are not just future citizens, but also are citizens of the city in the here and now, with the right to express their opinions and participate in the civic and cultural life of San Antonio,” Pre-K 4 SA wrote on their website.

First, the students vote on which nonprofit they will learn about and support that year. The children and their families then travel around the city, visiting local parks, historic city sites, art exhibits and monuments, in order to learn more about their community. This helps inspire them and give them ideas for their artwork.

Next, the students take what they’ve learned and begin creating art pieces, which are then displayed in a public gallery exhibit and auctioned to raise money for the nonprofit that they chose.

“As the world becomes increasingly more globalized and connected, knowledge of ourselves as individual learners and as members of a community becomes more important. Through Gracias San Antonio children have the opportunity to become active contributors within their community in order to make their city a better place to work, play, and live,” they wrote.
