Retiring Teacher Gets Emotional Send-Off On Her Last Day After 50 Years Of Teaching

A retiring teacher at a high school in Grand Rapids, Michigan, got an emotional send-off from students and fellow teachers on her last day.

72-year-old Sheridan Steelman first started teaching English when she was just 22 years old, and now her teaching journey has finally come to an end 50 years later.

After Steelman finished her last-ever school day, Principal Mark Thomas led her down the halls of Northview High School, which was lined with students and teachers who were cheering her on.

As Steelman was greeted by everyone who loved her, she wiped away tears before doing a twirl.

Steelman had asked Principal Thomas if he would walk her out on her last day, and although he was honored, he knew he couldn’t do it justice.

That’s when he came up with the idea to surprise her with the entire school on her last walk down the halls.

Principal Thomas looks back on Steelman’s career and says what an incredible teacher she was. She was constantly looking at new innovations and best practices and implementing them in her classroom. She loved all of her students and was always engaging with them.

Deciding to finally retire was not an easy decision for Steelman.

“I thought it would be really cool to be able to go to 50 years but I didn’t want to do it unless I was still really having fun and enjoying myself and was in good health and still learning a lot,” Steelman told GMA.

“I feel like I could have gone a lot longer,” she continued. “But I also feel like it’s time and even though they say, ‘Well, were you ready?’ No, but it’s time. It’s also time for those younger teachers to move up into leadership positions as department leader and curriculum teacher leader in the district.”

One of Steelman’s six kids, Katherine, posted the send-off video on her TikTok, which quickly went viral, amassing more than six million views.

Now that Steelman is retired, she hopes to travel a lot more, and will soon release a book based on her dissertation called “16th Century Shakespeare and 21st Century Students.”
