Spelling Bee Winner Receives Multiple Full-Ride Scholarship Offers

Zaila Avant-Garde has accomplished a lot more in her 14 years on earth than most people do in a lifetime.

The Harvey, Louisiana native not only holds three Guinness World Records but also won the recent 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Zaila won the spelling bee at Disney World with the word, “Murraya,” and now holds the title of being the first African American winner in the history of the tournament.

Naturally, Zaila is celebrating her historic win, but she’s also got a lot more to celebrate. In lieu of her champion title, she’s also received three separate full-ride scholarships for different colleges.

With her impressive track record, it may come as little surprise that the young woman was offered not one, but three full-ride scholarships.

The first college to extend a full-ride scholarship offer was Louisiana Community & Technical College System. They shared on Facebook, “In celebration of her incredible performance at the National Spelling Bee, LCTCS is proud to offer Zaila Avant-garde a full scholarship to any Louisiana community and technical college.” They went on to mention that they have an aerospace technology program that they believed would be a good fit for her interests and skills.

The next morning, Ogden Honors College offered her a full-ride scholarship in a Tweet. They said, “Your academic performance reflected scholarship first! You modeled intellectual excellence. @LSU_Honors awaits. I write to offer you a full scholarship to attend LSU. Here for you!”

Later that same day, Zaila was offered a third full-ride scholarship to Southern University in Louisiana. They Tweeted, “I am pleased to announce that @Southernu_BR is offering #ZailaAvantgarde a full scholarship and “#Zaila Day” at SU, part of the nation’s only #HBCU system.”

It’s safe to say that this is one young woman with a bright future. We can’t wait to see where she ends up!
