Last week Scholastic announced that, with the help of musician Taylor Swift, they would be donating 25,000 books to New York City schools. The donation was made possible by Swift’s participation in their “Open a World of Possible” initiative, which aims at encouraging children to read outside of their scheduled curriculum. The publishing company chose to focus on the issue of improving access to books after a report revealed that children from low-income homes are less likely to read for entertainment than their high-income counterparts.

The generosity of Taylor Swift and Scholastic will provide 1,000 new books to 25 schools, with hopes of elevating the quality and selection of books offered to students, and the goal of promoting independent reading through offering a wide variety of options for them to enjoy. Swift’s kindness and support of literacy was demonstrated late last year as well, when she donated her time to the following webcast. In the video, the singer-songwriter and sometimes actress hosts a discussion with a group of kids about the value of reading and writing, their favorite books, and the importance of being themselves. The 30-minute long video is worth every minute — these insightful kids are pretty adorable, and Swift’s message is inspiring.
