United Way Encourages Love of Books

Most students spend their first few years of school learning to read, and from third grade on they read to learn. However, children who aren’t proficient readers by their third year of primary school are four times more likely to drop out of high school.

United Way of the Midlands is working toward making an impact on the education of children in their community with the Midlands Reading Consortium (MRC).

Volunteers in the program spend time tutoring students to ensure that they are reading at the proper level, and last year the program donated over 50,000 books to 6,500 students to encourage summer reading.

The goal of United Way Worldwide is to improve education, help people become financially stable, and promote good health. Programs like the MRC are what it takes to encourage children around the world to get excited about literacy.
